Welcome! This is a website that everyone can build together. It's easy!

HomeThis is a featured page

This wiki is intended to promote an international exchange among practitioners, researchers, administrators and government officials about how schools can reduce or prevent substance abuse and other addictive behaviours through school-based and school-linked programs.

The basic orientation of this wiki is that a comprehensive approach that links substance abuse to other social behaviours and development and employs a multi-level, systems-based strategy will lead to coordinated programs and services provided by the school, other agencies and the community which, in turn, will lead to whole school strategies that result in health promoting schools.

To get a better understanding of the content of the wiki and how it is organized, please read the Introduction, our Summary of Knowledge on School SA Prevention, the Ten Key Points used to organize the content and, especially, the Table of Contents. All of these pages are found in the section entitled About this wiki.

The initial content of this wiki has been derived from a Canadian project funded by Health Canada and led by the Canadian Association for School Health in partnership with the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse. This wiki is also linked to other wikis that are part of related Canadian and international projects. These include another international wiki on effective school health/social development programs and another on School Health Indicators. The International School Health Network is pleased to facilitate this international dialogue.

The Ten Key Points Common to School Human Development Programs that have identified by the International School Health Network has been used to structure the content of this wiki. While we have used these ten key points that are common to these whole school-community strategies, we are not trying to develop an over-arching model. Each school, each community, each country needs to develop its own comprehensive approach, to coordinate the programs that it has selected and create its own school-based and school-linked strategies to prevent substance abuse.

A Two Phase Consultation is being Launched by this Wiki

This wiki is being developed by a consultative process that has begun in Canada and extended to other countries. In this first phase, we invite visitors to this public wiki to comment on the overall approach, the structure, listing and organization of the topics as well as to suggest good sources of content or experts/practitioners who could be asked to develop and maintain pages within this wiki.

We also ask for comment on the listing of good or promising practices that are found at the bottom of most pages. If you would like to add to or amend the listing of good/promising practices, please do. Whenever possible, please cite the source of that advice and, if you can, please add a web link to that source.

Using the Tools from this wiki web site

In this phase, anyone who comes visit this wiki can contribute content. The easiest way to to that is to add a new or respond to an existing "thread" of commentary found at the bottom of each page. Or, you can click on the "easy edit" button at the top of each page to add a brief description of relevant research, reports or people who could be contacted to maintain this page, including yourself. If you want to create a new topic within the wiki, you can add a page using the "Add Page" button in the left hand margin. There are other tools available on this wiki platform but we ask that you refrain from those more elaborate technology functions until this first phase is complete.

Be sure to let us know that you are interested in being a contributor to this wiki by either Joining the Wiki (found in the top navigation bar) or by simply emailing dmccall@cash-aces.ca We have invited experts, practitioners, administrators, government officials and policy-makers to comment on and add to the content of these pages. Please feel free to add content.

Also, before you begin to contribute o this wiki, please read our section starting with the page About this Wiki. It includes an Intriduction, a Summary, the list of Ten Key Points used to organize the content and our Discussion Guidelines. Also, please read our Table of Contents.

In the second phase of the development of this wiki, we will be asking practitioners, graduate students, researchers and officials to prepare summaries of 2-3 pages and to post them as "pages" within this wiki. These summaries will include a summary of the evidence, identify selected research references, create links to relevant national or international reports and list examples of programs, practices or studies that illustrate the content of the summary.

We will be contacting practitioners, experts, officials and others across Canada and around the world to join us in this wiki because we believe that this knowledge has no boundaries. Please note, however, that we are emphasizing the need to develop school programs differently in different contexts, so we will be seeking a wide diversity of people.

The members of the International School Health Network are pleased to host this discussion. This wiki has been established by the Canadian Association for School Health with funding from the Community Initiaitves Fund of Health Canada.

dmccall From JackHellerComment an alcohol use in US 0 Aug 28 2009, 3:41 PM EDT by dmccall

Drinking too much, too often is a common problem in the United States. Up to 7.8% of kids 12 and older have a drinking problem severe enough to require treatment. Many who abuse alcohol are in denial of their condition, and they drink on a frequent basis and thus increase their tolerance to alcohol. As this happens, the body becomes so dependent upon alcohol that suddenly stopping the drinking habit can result in withdrawal. An alcohol rehab detox intervention is needed to supervise the patient while he is experiencing these symptoms in order to prevent him from starting drinking again.

The patient might think that drinking will solve the withdrawal problems, but this is only a temporary fix, and it will not enable him to reach sobriety any sooner. By being enrolled in an alcohol rehab detox intervention program, the patient has enough support to get through the often week long painful ordeal of withdrawal. In order to begin the detoxification process, a treatment program needs to be located in an area convenient to the patient.
